A few months ago we announced Wasmer Edge: a fast, secure way for developers to build their services with infinite scalability and with affordable prices.
It has been awesome to see how the beta users have been using the service to deploy their own websites and projects, expanding the use cases beyond what we imagined.
Today we are incredibly excited to announce Wasmer Edge (Beta) General Availability. You can sign up and use Edge right now!
What is Wasmer Edge?
Wasmer Edge is a new computing platform that aims to make deploying apps an order of magnitude more accessible for individuals and companies currently using the hyper scalars (AWS, Google Cloud, Azure). First, because it’s affordable. And second, because it scales infinitely without requiring the users to change a line of code!
We believe that Wasmer Edge will pave the way towards the future of scalable software infrastructure.
Along with the public launch of Wasmer Edge (Beta), we are also adding support for two new languages: Javascript and Python. We also increased the global availability of Wasmer Edge by expanding to new new regions (from 3 regions to 7 regions).
Note: Wasmer Edge is still in Beta, so there might be a few rough edges… please let us know if you encounter any issue in our Discord.
Languages Supported
As of today, the languages supported in Wasmer Edge are:
- Static Websites
→ Quickstart docs - C (via
wasix-libc
) - Rust (via
cargo-wasix
)
→ Quickstart docs - Javascript Service Workers (beta) via WinterJS (in beta)
→ Quickstart docs • Example repo - Python (so you can run Django in Wasmer Edge!)
→ Quickstart docs • Example repo - Any language that supports Webassembly and WASI or WASIX, via WCGI
Wasmer Edge will be free for everyone while in Beta, so we can learn from real usage and do the last tweaks on pricing. So far, we believe we will be able to offer one of the most competitive prices in the industry after the beta is over. Please check our tentative pricing page to see how we compare against other providers.
New PoPs
We have also doubled the Points of Presence where Wasmer Edge is available, now serving from many new locations:
- US West
- US East
- Europe
- Japan - Tokyo (new!)
- China - Hong Kong (new!)
- Brazil - Sao Paulo (new!)
- Australia - Sydney (new!)
We are able to scale rapidly thanks to Equinix Metal and their Startup program... check them out!
How Wasmer Edge compares to other services
Both Cloudflare Workers and Amazon Lambda have set the benchmark on pricing and scalability of serverless infrastructure, but as they are often built on traditional architectures that have inherited constraints, they are lacking some capabilities we believe are essential for the next generation of workloads running on the Edge.
We have created comparison pages to help anyone understand the difference between the different providers, please check them out!
What’s next
Our first generation of hosting services are focused on running stateless workloads, but there are many features that makes us very optimistic about the future use cases that we will enable:
- TCP and UDP workloads. Please connect us if you have this needs, and we will enable the feature asap for you!
- Persistence: Wasmer Edge will soon be able to host stateful workloads with acess to your own dedicated globally distributed file system.
- Location Pinning: Soon we will give the ability to pin your workload to one or more specific region(s) for when the default of run everywhere does not fit your legal or performance requirements.
- Add support for more languages. Support for Ruby and Go would be a great addition to the ecosystem.
- Faster startup times. Further optimizations of startup and compile times with async threading and distributed Wasm compilation.
